Georg Bauer, under the Latinized form of his name, Georgius Agricola, wrote De Re Metallica, a classic treatise on mining, in 1556. His warnings about many varieties of mine swindling demonstrate that the practices go back centuries.

Despite the problems, Bauer advised that a diversified and carefully chosen portfolio of mining shares was the wisest investment - still good advice after 450 years.
